Blooming Now

“My intention is to raise the global vibration through the music and live experience that Govinda creates.”

[dropcap2]G[/dropcap2]ovinda is the alter-ego of Austin based producer/composer Shane Madden. He began studying violin and composition at the age of eight and went on to study classical violin at the University of Texas where he fell in love with electronic music production. It was in Madden’s pursuit of his gypsy roots that he opened his ears to music from around the world. From experiences learning violin with mysterious masters on his journeys across the globe and his passion for modern design and technology, the current sound of Govinda was born.

Govinda has played with Thievery Corporation, Tipper, Bassnectar, Shpongle, Cheb I Sabbah, STS9 and many more and been featured on over 25 compilations such as Buddha Bar II, Asian Travels II, and Nirvana Lounge selling a combined 400,000 copies. Govinda has played at numerous festivals throughout North America including Coachella, Lightning in a Bottle, Sea of Dreams, SXSW and more. Govinda’s music has been licensed on shows like “Roswell” (WB), “Road Rules” (MTV), and “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” (Bravo) as well as many independent films.

SolPurpose :: From classical instrumentation and Eastern cultural influences, to genre bending electronic compositions, Govinda features a myriad of diversely inspired sound leaving a lasting mark on contemporary music culture. Can you speak about your journey developing Govinda sound?

Govinda :: I started by developing my technique in classical violin studies all the way through college at the University of Texas at Austin. After college I wanted to break from the rigidity of my studies and see the rest of the world. In my travels I was introduced to new music and new ways of thinking. I found a spiritual teacher, learned about food, architecture and design and…Govinda was born. In this renaissance of my life the music was a culmination of all the rich experiences in my 20′s. Govinda’s sound continued to evolve as I became more connected to the West Coast festival scene and electronic music culture.

[pullquote_right]“I know that one of my life’s purposes is to bring music to people that elevates their senses and supercharges the community through expressive events. Ultimately, I am creating art and music that is an active part of the pursuit of global enlightenment.”[/pullquote_right]

SolPurpose :: Our art serves as a channel for our deepest thoughts and most intimate emotions. What influences in your life has had the most lasting impact on your artistic development and expression? What serves as your fuel to continually grow and create?

Govinda :: Many things but perhaps the greatest influence in my music has been the joy of seeing people lose themselves into ecstatic dance. My vision is to create mysterious soundscapes that mesmerize and elate.

SolPurpose :: The violin is traditionally known for its powerful empathic qualities, yet it is seldom paired with the progressive energy of dance music culture. What inspired you to marry the classical technique of violin with the pioneering genre of electronica?

Govinda :: Well I love rhythm and melody together. I find a strong rhythmic drive in the music connects to root chakra dancing. Its a grounding and visceral experience. The violin adds the balancing force of melody which soars into ethereal higher chakras allowing listeners to to supercharge their own physical and spiritual experience.

SolPurpose :: The long road of touring holds many challenges. Leaving the comforts of home and family life, traveling vast hours often alone, finding a balance for eating and sleeping. How do you remain healthy and centered on tour? Is there anything that you would personally recommend to up and coming artists to help them maintain focus as they navigate the sometimes tumultuous waters of a early career?

Govinda :: I found that staying in hotels that are away from festival grounds is key for me. When I first started playing the festie scene, I would set up camp for the weekend and participate in all the late night activities. Then I would need half of the following week to recover before I went and did it all again the next weekend. Now I have quiet time in my room to practice violin and relax so I can pull off the best show possible when I am up there on stage.

SolPurpose :: You recently released a new album “Universal On Switch,” which features a fresh blend of Govinda’s traditional downtemple melodic style with a healthy serving of primordial bass. Can you talk about your creative intention behind the manifestation of Universal On Switch?

Govinda :: I wanted to revisit the classic Govinda sound with seductive violin melodies while at the same time throwing down a raw phat beat to make a dance floor crush. I tried to push the envelope by using sounds that created tension and resolution as well as blending sounds that weren’t usually put together in music.

SolPurpose :: You recently suffered through the tragic theft of a year’s savings by a former close friend. Can you tell us a little bit more about the situation and how we might be able to help you and your family get back on its feet?

Govinda :: Yes, we were hit pretty hard by this theft. He stole all of my Govinda show savings. This was the money that was going to make the show go to the next level. This was all the money with which I was supporting my family. I am offering an exclusive download with your donation of $3 or more. This is the only way this song will ever be available. Thank you all of you for continuing to support Govinda and our vision. to donate and link to exclusive track.

SolPurpose :: Where is the Govinda light ship headed next?

Govinda :: My vision for Govinda has always and continue to be to create a theatrical show with choreography, dance, lights and projections mixed with the same hauntingly seductive bone crushing beats an soundscapes we have always had….A snake pit dance party on steroids.
